Keeping Lake Tahoe blue

About 3 million visitors a year are drawn to Lake Tahoe for its recreational opportunities, mountain scenery and clear blue water. But development, traffic and air pollution have caused Tahoe’s trademark blue water to gradually cloud up and turn green. Researchers are studying the problem, and property owners have until 2008 to comply with erosion-control measures, which are being phased in over eight years.

Lake Tahoe -- The text with a graphic in Tuesday’s California section said that development, traffic and air pollution had caused Lake Tahoe’s trademark blue water to gradually become cloudy and turn green. Those factors are causing changes in the lake, but only some of the lake water has turned color. The text implied that it had turned completely.
