Brando’s ‘Godfather’ Script Draws Record Bid

Marlon Brando’s hand-marked script for “The Godfather” sold for $312,800 at Christie’s International in New York, the most ever paid for a screenplay at auction.

The 173-page script, which had a presale estimate of $10,000 to $15,000, topped the record held by Clark Gable’s copy of “Gone With the Wind,” which sold for $244,000 at Christie’s in 1996.

The sale of Brando’s personal effects lasted more than six hours and totaled $2.4 million, with many of the 328 lots soaring beyond estimates.

The strongest bidding was for material related to “The Godfather,” the 1972 film that earned Brando his second Oscar as best actor. Brando died last year at the age of 80.
