Protectors of the giants should stand tall

Re “That Tree Stood for So Much,” July 6
By allowing the logging of 700-year-old trees like Aradia, we are abandoning our own roots. The featured majestic redwood tree must have first pushed through soil around 1300 AD, almost 200 years before Columbus sailed. Giant redwoods stand like silent sentries through millenniums. They withstand violent winds, raging fires, floods and drought.
But the one thing these venerable giants cannot survive is a chain saw and the indignity of ending up as redwood planters on suburban redwood decking. Young people like Jason Wilson and David Nathan Chain put their lives on hold and at risk in courageous attempts to save what remains of our last sky-piercing forests. They deserve respect.
