Fraud Unit to Probe Deputies’ Injury Claims

Sheriff Lee Baca announced a new workers’ compensation fraud unit Tuesday that will investigate injury claims filed by sheriff’s deputies.
Baca said the $1.5-million unit, which will include up to 10 investigators, will save money by deterring fraud and encouraging injured deputies to return to work. During the fiscal year that ended June 30, the Sheriff’s Department paid about $85 million in workers’ comp claims.
