Weekend box office
“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” had a slightly sweeter opening than estimates in Monday’s story indicated, bringing in $56.2 million instead of $55.4 million. Additionally, a foresighted mistake in Monday’s story turned out to be correct when estimates were updated with more reliable numbers: “Charlie” had the third-best opening weekend this year. The earlier story managed to overlook the $56.1-million opening the previous weekend of “Fantastic Four,” which was better than the $55.4 million Warner Bros. estimated for the Tim Burton-Johnny Depp collaboration, and until Monday morning, “Fantastic” would have had the year’s third-best opening weekend.
“Wedding Crashers” also wound up performing better than expected, taking in $33.9 million instead of the $32.2 million reported Monday.
