Atheists and their outlook on the world

Re “A Time of Doubt for Atheists,” Column One, July 18
In the name of Allah, suicide bombers have killed thousands; in the name of Jesus Christ, the Bush administration invaded two nations and killed tens of thousands more. Followers of Christ in this country routinely preach one thing and do the opposite, whether it be prohibiting civil rights for gays and lesbians or sending hate mail to atheists. I don’t need to believe in a deity to see the wisdom and beauty of actually treating others as you would be treated.

Let’s face it: Organizing atheists is like trying to herd cats. As one of those contemptible nonbelievers, however, I do use the word “god,” with a small “g,” as a metaphor for all that can neither be proved by the scientific method nor known to the rational mind. In this world of spirituality, metaphysics and blind religious faith, attempting to be rational is a difficult task. That is why there are so few of us.

Suffering humanity has always looked to a God for support and comfort. If the atheists have none, they should invent one: How about “money”?
