Running on hydrogen

In five to 10 years, many Californians should be able to tank up on hydrogen and tool around in electric cars powered by fuel cell, which produce electricity by converting hydrogen and oxygen into water vapor. The fuel cells are bundled to generate enough power to move an auto at freeway speeds. About 78 such experimental cars and buses are being tested in California, almost all in commercial fleets.
