Undercutting the Rain Forest ‘Myth’
Re “Rain Forest Myth Goes Up in Smoke Over the Amazon,” June 8: The article on the “myth” of the rain forest argues that the rain forest is a source of pollution rather than the “lungs of the world.”
The forest isn’t the source of pollution. Burning the forest is the source of pollution. The plant life of the rain forest is still “the lungs of the world,” as long as it lasts. The proponents who are trying to save the rain forest aren’t propagating a fallacy; they’re trying to stop the practices that cause pollution.
