Police Officer Promoted After Protecting Family
- Share via
A 64-year-old police officer two weeks away from retirement will be promoted to detective after protecting a woman and her two young children when a gunman opened fire inside a precinct house in Jersey City.
Michael Gullace, who has spent 38 years on the job, was working a desk shift when he heard shots.
Gullace grabbed the gunman’s girlfriend and their children and threw his body over them. When a detective returning fire at the man ran out of bullets, Gullace tossed him his weapon. The suspect was hospitalized with numerous gunshot wounds.
Gullace’s promotion to detective will sweeten his pension. In his years on the job, he has never had to draw his weapon.
