Philanthropist to Award $1-Million Science Prizes

A Norwegian-born philanthropist who made a $340-million fortune in California said he would award $1-million prizes for astrophysics, neuroscience and nanotechnology every other year beginning in 2008.
Fred Kavli, a physicist who funds 10 science institutes, including one at Stanford University, made his fortune with a firm making sensors used for flight control and cars.
