From Times Staff and Wire Reports
NASA is offering $250,000 to the first team that can extract breathable oxygen from simulated moon rock.
The MoonROx (Moon Regolith Oxygen) challenge requires the mass and power limits of the hardware to be within precise limits and must allow extraction of 11 pounds of oxygen from soil in an eight-hour period.
Such technology would assist NASA’s goal of establishing a permanent base on the moon as a first step toward a manned expedition to Mars.
