Enjoying Dali’s genius firsthand

Seeing the photo of Salvador Dali [“In Spain, the Complete Dali,” May 15] reminded me of an old saying: “It is better to be good than bad and sane than mad.” You have to see one of Dali’s paintings in person to appreciate his artistic genius -- whether he was mad or not.

My husband and I were in Barcelona recently and planning a trip to the Dali Museum in Figueres. On our second day, my purse, which was strapped around my neck, was yanked until the strap broke.
We found two policeman, and they were very blase about the situation and said to file a report. At the Barcelona police station, we were in a room with about 20 other victims, young, old and even a man on crutches, all of whom were victims of purse, briefcase and other valuables being snatched or pickpocketed.
Although I had only a minor cut and bruises on my neck, we decided to cut our trip to Spain short by several days.
These occurrences seem to be an accepted way of life in these large cities, and the police do not seem to be concerned. Please caution tourists to be careful in Spain.
