Roberson Forces Issue for St. Bonaventure

Dwight Roberson is an athletic, acrobatic middle linebacker for Ventura St. Bonaventure who loves to cause havoc. He did his job Friday night, blocking a punt, forcing a fumble and batting away a fourth-down pass to help the Seraphs defeat Ridgecrest Burroughs, 24-14, in a Southern Section nonleague season opener at Ventura High.
Adam Liranzo had two of St. Bonaventure’s three interceptions and Michael Lee rushed for 127 of his 139 yards in the second half for the Seraphs, who broke a 14-14 tie early in the fourth quarter when Ricky Garcia caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Samson Szakacsy.
Perhaps the best player on the field was Burroughs’ Hayo Carpenter, a senior receiver who caught 12 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown. He also made an interception in the end zone. David LaFrombiose completed 20 of 36 passes for 203 yards for the Burros.

La Puente Bishop Amat 30, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 15 -- Christopher Comouche caught six passes for 112 yards to lead the Lancers over their former Del Rey League rivals in a Southern Section nonleague opener at Bishop Amat.
On the Lancers’ opening drive, Comouche caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Robles, who would also score on a one-year sneak and throw a screen pass to Dominique Gaisie for a 26-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
St. Paul punter Michael Thomas was able to salvage one errant snap in the first half and kick it away for positive yardage, but he had to boot a second bad snap out of the end zone for a safety, increasing Bishop Amat’s lead to 23-0 with 1 minute 43 seconds left in the half.

Hollywood 35, L.A. Belmont 14 -- Jesse Rivers rushed for three touchdowns and Ivan Rodriguez, who recovered two fumbles, rushed for two as the Sheiks ended a 42-game losing streak.
The Sheiks last won a game on Oct. 20, 2000, against Sun Valley Poly. Only Moorpark (46, 1972 to ‘82), Lone Pine (45, 1975 to ‘82) and Garden Grove Bolsa Grande (43, 1999 to 2003) had longer losing streaks in state history.
“I think the kids were a little stunned at first and weren’t quite sure what to do,” said Jeff Trovatten, Hollywood’s third-year coach. “Our problem has been teaching these kids how to win, so hopefully, we’ll be able to build on this one.”
