Los Angeles County will pay $199,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of a patient who died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center from brain swelling caused by an infestation of pork tapeworm.
County attorneys told the Board of Supervisors in a memo that doctors failed to quickly operate on Judit Perez, 20, when she complained of severe head pain in May 1993.
“This failure fell below the standard of care,” the memo said.
The county spent nearly $97,000 fighting the suit.
