Atlanta pitcher Mike Hampton will have major elbow surgery next week and sit out the 2006 season.
The 33-year-old left-hander will undergo the Tommy John procedure Monday in New York.
“The expected return is 2007,” Atlanta General Manager John Schuerholz said. The Braves also announced that John Smoltz will skip today’s scheduled start because of a sore shoulder.

Jon Moeller, the chapel leader for the Washington Nationals, was suspended after a flap over comments about Jewish people.
According to an article published Sunday in the Washington Post, outfielder Ryan Church said he asked Moeller if Jews are “doomed” because they do not believe in Jesus. Church said Moeller nodded.
