Re “California’s Levees Are in Sorry Shape,” Sept. 19
The Delta is increasingly vulnerable, and it’s time to do something about it. In our recently published report, the Assn. of California Water Agencies called on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to assemble a panel of experts to evaluate long-term risks in the Delta and recommend solutions. The answers are not likely to be cheap or politically easy. But dealing with the aftermath of a catastrophic flood is no bargain, as New Orleans is finding out now. Meanwhile, with 48 million Californians expected by 2030 and potentially bigger floods looming as a result of climate changes, the stakes are getting higher every day.
