YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK — A park officer died while hiking to investigate a visitor fatality, the National Park Service said Monday.
Special Agent Daniel Paul Madrid, 51, collapsed on the Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park on Saturday. Park rangers and a passing doctor were unable to resuscitate him, the park service said.
The agency did not provide details about the cause of death. Yosemite officials could not be reached for comment Monday night.
Madrid was stationed at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri, but he was sent to Yosemite to work temporarily while other special agents and park rangers helped with hurricane response efforts along the Gulf Coast.
Madrid, one of 48 special agents in the National Park Service, was the first to die in the line of duty, the service said. Born and raised in Arizona, he worked for the agency for more than 28 years.
Madrid is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and two adult children.
