From Times Staff Reports
A state appeals court panel Tuesday scheduled an April hearing for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s lawyers to defend an invalidated law that would have given the mayor substantial authority over the Los Angeles public schools.
The 2nd District Court of Appeal will hear oral arguments during the first week of April. A Superior Court judge last month ruled the law unconstitutional and in violation of the Los Angeles City Charter.
Villaraigosa’s attorneys are expected to ask the state Supreme Court today to take their appeal directly.
