DETROIT -- Jon Kitna threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and the Detroit Lions overcame mistakes and missed opportunities to beat the Chicago Bears, 37-27, Sunday.
Brian Griese, who had three passes intercepted as a starter in place of Rex Grossman, threw a one-yard pass to Desmond Clark with 52 seconds left to pull the Bears (1-3) within three points.
But Casey FitzSimmons returned the ensuing onside kick for a touchdown to seal the victory. The Lions are 3-1 for the first time since 2004.
Detroit scored an NFL-record 34 points in the fourth quarter.
Griese was 34 for 52 for 286 yards with two touchdowns.
Devin Hester returned a kickoff 97 yards, his seventh kick or punt return for a score in one-plus seasons with the Bears.
Detroit’s Shaun Rogers blocked a 52-yard field-goal try, giving him an NFL-high 11th blocked kick since 1991.
