Foster families need a raise

Re “Pay for foster care called too low,” Oct. 4

Your article pointing out the years of inadequate funding for licensed foster families caring for abused, abandoned and neglected children did not go far enough. Even with the 5% rate increase in January, the government reimbursements do not meet the costs of caring for these children. The gap is wider for foster parents certified by licensed foster family agencies, which will not receive a rate increase for the eighth consecutive year. As we face our ninth year with no increase in sight, we are forced to rely on private-sector fundraising to meet the cost of care. That’s a little like hoping to hit a slot machine jackpot to make the rent. The Legislature must focus on foster-care rate reform in the next session. All foster parents must be reimbursed appropriately for their heroic efforts in providing care for these children.
