Costs mount for another state tech project

California, no stranger to troubled technology projects, now has another upgrade facing delays and cost overruns.

A planned overhaul at the state’s human resources agency will cost more than twice as much as originally planned and take an extra two years to complete, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office.

“We concluded there was more work than was originally anticipated, and it would take longer after we evaluated it,” said Pat McConahay, a spokeswoman for the human resources agency. “We’ve revamped the project so we can assure its success.”

The goal is to make it easier for people to find, apply and take tests for state government jobs online.

The final bill is now estimated at $10 million, with a due date of May 2017.

It’s a small amount of money compared with other projects in Sacramento that can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Most notably, the California controller recently fired the contractor in charge of a $371-million upgrade of the state payroll system.

The state had already spent $254 million on the project but officials say the new system has never worked adequately.
