Utah: Shakespeare festival heads for 50th season in June

The Utah Shakespeare Festival will start its 50th season in June, kicking off with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The season, running June 23 through late October, will also feature productions of “Richard III” and “Romeo and Juliet” on an outdoor circular stage.
Started by a college professor, a few students and volunteer talent in sleepy Cedar City, the repertory Utah Shakespeare Festival has performed the entire Bard’s catalog and other comedies, dramas and musicals in half a century of curtain calls. The three inaugural plays drew about 3,300 theater-goers; last season’s attendance topped 112,000.
Besides works by Shakespeare, this season’s lineup will include modern classics such as “The Glass Menagerie,” “Music Man,” “Noises Off!” “The Winter’s Tale” and “Dial M for Murder.”
Tickets prices range from $16 to $71. A free “Greenshow,” an hour of Elizabethan singing, dancing, juggling and storytelling, precedes each Shakespeare performance until Sept. 3.
